Tramadol worth N5 billion confiscated by Customs in Lagos

Officers of the Nigerian Customs Service have successfully confiscated multiple packs of Tramadol, which were concealed inside cartons on some trucks, and in a warehouse in Lagos.

Customs’ public relations officer, Joseph Attah, who took newsmen on a mini-tour of the seized trucks, explained that the Comptroller-General of Customs Strike Force team was responsible for intercepting the banned substance during the last festive period. According to him, the smugglers must have chosen to transport the Tramadol tablets at the time because they felt security alertness would not be as high. However, the officers who were still on active duty, proved to them that the Customs Service is always vigilant.

Joseph progressed, “On Aug. 13, at about 2 a.m, operatives of the Headquarters Strike Force Zone A intercepted a truck laden with dreaded codeine, tramadol and other controlled pain killers along Maryland, Ikeja road.

“The intercepted trailer contains illicit drugs and was immediately brought to the attention of the team leader of the force, Assist. Comptroller of Customs Usman Yahya, who deepened preliminary investigation that led to the discovery of a warehouse along Oshodi-Mile 2 road.

“The warehouse was stocked with tramadol, codeine, and other unregistered pharmaceutical products without the National Agency for Foods Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) number.”
