“The APC government is killing public education” – ASUU laments

2 Min Read

The Academic Staff of Universities, ASUU, has condemned the attitude of the current administration and members of the All Progressive Congress towards public education funding in the country.

According to the union, efforts of academic staff in these universities would not amount to the provision of qualitative education if the lingering lack of funds persists.

It further stated that up to 500, 000 Nigerians don’t get admission into public universities on a yearly basis and that is due to lack of proper infrastructure to cater to them.

Moreso, President Buhari’s policy on education was said to have been anti-masses in nature, and in so doing, the youths are denied the opportunity to know their rights and speak against bad leadership.

“The APC government is killing public education” – ASUU laments

The statement released by the body reads, “The APC government’s failure to fund education is a design to kill public universities. University of Ibadan is groaning terribly due to paucity of funds. Retired academics cannot be replaced because government deliberately refused to make budgetary provision for growth and development.

“This crisis has led to the staff on ground being overworked leading to early deaths of many of our colleagues. Education is not the priority of this government. Due to paucity of funds, many universities including University of Ibadan, the nation’s premier university, cannot admit many qualified candidates into the universities.

“This is dangerous to the society as the rejected qualified and brilliant candidates may eventually take to crimes because the country has rejected them. The policy is not only wicked but criminal.”
