The National Food, Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) has placed a ban on the open sale of popular insecticide, Sniper.
The ban is coming in the heels of incessant cases of suicide across the country associated with the highly poisonous insecticide.
NAFDAC’s Director, Veterinary Medicine and Allied Products Directorate, Dr. Bukar Usman made the development known on Wednesday, at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan.

The ban will restrict agro-dealers from selling the product in open markets and supermarkets.
According to Usman, the move will curtail the use of Sniper (Dichlorvos or 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate) in homes to end the abuse of the pesticide.
He, however, added that the directive was not an outright ban of the product, but a restriction of its use and availability to farms alone, adding all agro-chemicals meant for farms should not be used in households.
