A very young kidnap suspect, Sani Haruna, has confessed to killing an uncountable number of victims before he was apprehended.
The 20-year-old man was nabbed alongside a couple of other kidnap suspects by the Police Special Tactical Team, and IGP’s Intelligence Response Team in the northern part of the country.
In his confessional statement, Sani, who was nicknamed Gayu, mentioned that he had only joined the gang a year ago, and was made to look after the victims.
As part of his duties, he was also asked to kill victims whose relations could not pay their ransoms.
Sani further confessed that his gang operated along Katsina, Zamfara, and Abuja highways.
He stated, “I am the guard for kidnapped persons where they were kept in the bush in Katsina State. I have been doing that for one year. Before joining this, I was a herdsman.”
Sani, who mentioned that he had two children, explained that he was formerly a herdsman but some cattle rustlers rid him of his cows and left him jobless. Hence, he decided to meet the commander of the gang, seeking for a job.
He continued, “In God’s name, I have lost count because I don’t keep a record of the people I kill but I know they are many.
“Even when I didn’t want to kill them, I was always afraid because it could amount to disobeying the directive of my boss. I might even be killed.”
Sani equally narrated how a sheik within the gang would prepare the body of the dead victims and bury them in a proper Islamic way.
He said, “The mallam will prepare them according to Islamic rites, pray for their souls and we will bury them properly.”
