Former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has hailed the release of Zainab Habibu Aliyu, a Nigerian lady arrested in Saudi Arabia for being in possession of a banned substance.
Zainab, a student of Maitama Sule University, Kano, travelled for Lesser Hajj in December 2018 and was arrested by Saudi authorities for being in possession of Tramadol.
Another man, Ibrahim Abubakar, also arrested for drug-related reasons was also released.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mustapha Sulaiman said, “I am pleased to inform you that in the last few minutes ago the girl and the gentleman have been released.
“I am happy to announce to you that in the last couple of minutes Zainab is with our mission in Saudi and we believe that the other gentleman will be released before tomorrow.
“Because by the time they were able to get his file, it was closing hour and before they got to his location, where he was being kept, it was already late.’’
Reacting, Fani-Kayode hailed the President Muhammadu Buhari administration for securing Zainab’s release.
He said, “Securing the release of Zainab from execution in a Saudi prison is a great achievement by Muhammadu Buhari.
“She was due to be executed for a crime she never committed.Buhari saved her life by intervening and for the first time in 4 years I am proud to be a Nigerian! Welcome home Zainab!”
