David Mark reduced running cost of senators from N20m to N13m – Sen. Adeyeye

2 Min Read

The senator representing Osun Central senatorial district, Sen. Olusola Adeyeye, has disclosed that he prevailed on immediate-past Senate President, David Mark to reduce the running cost of senators from N20 million to the present N13.5 million.

Adeyeye made the disclosure in reaction to criticism directed at him for claiming that Nigeria’s 1999 constitution could not bring development and senators were spineless for not attempting to amend it.

The senator’s passionate disavowal of the consitution was captioned in a video that has since gone viral,

Watch video:

Recall that Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani revealed in 2018 that each senator receives N13.5 million monthly as running cost in addition to N700,000 monthly consolidated salary and allowances .

However, Adeyeye revealed that the running cost for senators used to be higher until he prevailed on Mark to reduce it to the present amount.

The senator said, “Let me say that the running costs used to be very significantly higher than the current amount at a time when the naira fetched twice its current value of hard currency.

“I dare say that I was a pivotal anchor of internal pressures that reduced the running costs from what was as high as 20 million naira per month. I had long discussions with Senator David Mark.

“To his credit, I did not need to talk much to convince him about the necessity to reduce the running costs. The knotty issues were the timing and magnitude of reduction.

“That Senator David Mark survived eight years as Senate President, despite stepwise reduction of running costs during his tenure, speaks volumes about his leadership skills and dexterity.”
