A Divisional Police Officer attached to the Doubelli Police Station in Yola has been apprehended alongside give other police officers working in the station.
Their arrests came after the worrisome deaths of two men who had been locked up in the police station.
The victims, Emmanuel Nick, 24, and Abdullahi Maimatarba, were reportedly tortured repeatedly until they gave up the ghost, right inside the particular police station.
Nick’s father then raised an alarm about the incident, claiming that the officers were trying to cover up the case.
The matter soon blew out of proportions when some members of Vigilante and hunters association began to protest the killing of the two men.
They eventually moved the protests to the Police headquarters in the state and gained the attention of the Police Commissioner, Adamu Madaki.
Following their meeting with the CP, the DPO in charge of the police station, Mohammed Kallam, and five other officers were summoned to the headquarters where they were subsequently questioned and detained.
After the swift moves by the Commissioner, Yola State’s Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar, affirmed that the matter was now being looked into.
He stated, “The DPO has been removed from his station because he was under investigation alongside five officers handling the case. DSP Kallam’s Orderly Room trial was due to the fact that he is the supervising officer, as the DPO there.
“He has to give an account of what transpired from the beginning to the end. One of the officers being detained said the DPO was directly involved in the torture of the victim, but the investigations will ascertain who actually carried out the torture.”
