NEMA distributes food items to 32, 400 resettled persons in Borno

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday said it had distributed assorted food items to 32,400 resettled displaced persons in Konduga and Kaga Local Government Areas of Borno.

Cdr. Salisu Danjuma, the Head of Federal Government’s Emergency Food Intervention Programme in charge of Bono, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

He listed the items as rice, beans, flour, tomato paste, seasoning, salt and cooking oil.

Danjuma said that the items were distributed through NEMA under its special food intervention, to address the need of persons affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.

He said that the items were distributed at Jakana community following the resettlement of the affected persons to their homes on April 11.

The Nigerian Army had on April 9 evacuated residents of Jakana to the Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri for safety.

Their evacuation was due to the ongoing clearance operation against the remaining of Boko Haram insurgents in the area.

Danjuma, however, explained that the items were distributed to 3, 600 displaced persons at Jakana; 11, 100 at Mainok and 17, 700 at Benishiek respectively.

He added that each of the deserving families received 59.8 kilogramme of food basket to last them for a period of one month.

Commenting on the routine food distribution, he said that the agency was providing food assistance to over 234, 000 displaced persons monthly.

Danjuma said that the food items were being distributed to nine formal IDPs camps; 17 host communities and liberated communities.

“NEMA also distributed food items to displaced persons with special needs and those affected by fire disasters at Monguno, Gajiram and Banki.

“We are also providing interventions to augment efforts by the World Food Programme (WFP); Save the Children and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to address the food needs of the displaced persons,” he said.

According to him, the agency has concluded distribution of food items donated by King Salman Foundation of Saudi Arabia during the April exercise.

Danjuma added that the donated food items were distributed to over 31, 000 displaced households between December and April. (NAN)
