Christian Elders Express Shock At CAN Leadership’s Visit To Buhari

National Christian Elders’ Forum (NCEF) has described as “shocking” the decision of the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to visit and congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the February 23 presidential election.

NCEF President, Solomon Asowata made this known in a Monday statement in Abuja.

He wondered why the CAN leadership could not wait for the report of the more than 1,000 election observers it deployed during the polls before embarking on the hasty journey to Aso Rock.

Asowata added that the Rev. Samson Ayokunle-led CAN leadership ought to have delayed the congratulatory visit to the president since the outcome of the presidential poll was “sub judice”.

He therefore described the visit as “premature and presumptuous”, adding that it could not be in the interest of Nigerians.

According to him, “It is well known the indifference of the Buhari administration to attacks and murder of Christians across Nigeria.

“This indifference led many, including foreign observers, to conclude that the Buhari’s administration is complicit in the genocide that is taking place in Nigeria.

“The action of the CAN president was a further confirmation of all the protests and petitions of NCEF in 2018, querying the faithfulness of Dr. Ayokunle to Christ and his church.”

The NCEF President said that the CAN leadership must retrace its steps and support the course of Christians who, he noted, are being killed, displaced and attacked daily by “killer” herdsmen in different parts of the country.
