Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has vowed to stay away from political and economic controversies after the 2019 general election.

Sanusi, who was Managing Director of First Bank Nigeria Plc, made this known at a dinner organised to mark the 125th anniversary of the bank on Tuesday, The Punch reported.

According to the report, the Emir prayed for the government to plan for the next 125 years of national life rather than four years.

He equally urged the government to develop strategies to promote girl-child education in the country.

Emir Sanusi said, “My new post-election resolution is to avoid controversies; economics, politics.

“My prayer is that with these elections, the government would not think of these four years, but the government would think of Nigeria 125 years from now.”

The controversial ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was a thorn in the flesh of the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

Also, he stirred the hornet’s nest at the inception of the Muhammadu Buhari administration by claiming that the administration was producing emergency billionaires through irregular foreign exchange schemes.

In the same vein, he was enmeshed in controversy in the build-up to the 2019 presidential election when a statement he made was interpreted to mean support for the candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The Emir said, “It is not always easy to have a leader who has both integrity and capacity to govern – two important qualities of a leader.

“If a leader does not have both integrity and capacity to govern, choose the one that has the capacity to govern because his capacity to govern will benefit the people while his lack of integrity will be his own harm.

“ If you choose a man who has integrity without capacity to govern, his lack of capacity to govern will harm the people while his integrity will only benefit himself.”
