Man batters officer seeking to arrest him in Lagos

3 Min Read

An officer with the Nigeria Police Force in Alagbado area reportedly got beaten by a resident after he approached him over a complaint at the station.

The sergeant, Muideen Ayinde had visited the area with the complainant in a bid to get the suspect, Emordi, arrested after he allegedly threatened to kill one Sunday Aina.

However, the suspect turned on the sergeant and began to assault him.

According to reports, Aina was on his way to visit a friend in the area when Emordi confronted him and accused him of trying to hit him with his car.

A quarrel soon broke out between them, prompting Emordi’s threats about killing Aina.

Aina’s wife later went to the police station to report the incident, hence, the Sergeant was assigned to follow her to the scene.

The sergeant explained, “On getting there, I approached Emordi and asked him what the problem was. I told him his attention was needed at the station.  He told me he was an Aye cult member and asked me to identify myself, and I did so.

“Surprisingly, he picked up an empty bottle and hit me in the face. He held on to my shirt and tore it. Many people came to beg him; he asked them to leave him. He said he wanted to deal with me. When I found out that I could not manage the situation, I called for reinforcement.”

However, Emordi argued that he never mentioned being a cult member and insisted that Aina intended to hit him with his car.

Emordi has since been arraigned with a five-count charge of assault and engaging in illegal societies and damage.

A portion of the charges states, “That you Henry Emordi on February 27, 2019, around 4.50pm at Awonusi Road Junction, Alagbado, Lagos, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did unlawfully assault one Sergeant Muyideen Ayinde attached to the Alagbado Police Division by punching him in the face which caused him an injury because he was trying to arrest you and prevent you from fomenting trouble.

“That you, Henri Emordi, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, violently threatened one Sergeant Muyideen Ayinde by chasing him with a broken bottle.

“That you, Henry Emordi, did engage in an unlawful society knowing full well that the society has been proscribed by the law.”

Emordi pleaded not guilty to the offenses. While his trial had been adjourned to March 23, 2019, the magistrate asked him to pay N50,000 with two sureties in like sum as bail.
