New minimum wage: Senate begins proceedings

2 Min Read

The Senate committee assigned to the bill on Minimum wage have held their first meeting yesterday, and all members agreed to fasten the process and ensure that their report gets to the House on Tuesday, next week.

Since the former head of the committee, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, withdrew on the ground of his health condition, the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, appointed Francis Alimikhena, the Deputy Majority Whip, to function as the acting head.

In the meeting, Alimikhena stated that he, as well as other members of the committee, will put heads together to ensure that there is no delay in passing the new minimum wage bill into law.

Equally, one of the members of the committee, Senator Solomon Adeola, the Lawmaker representing Lagos West, explained that the federal government revenue allocation apportionment should be revised, and perhaps, the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation body should take care of that. He explained that it will ensure fair implementation of the proposed new minimum wage across the country.

Adeola stated, “I am in support of the recommended minimum wage as it will go a long way in cushioning the challenges faced by workers. However, there must be no excuse for non-implementation by any tiers of government across the federation.

“It is in this wise that I call on the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission to begin a process that will lead to the review of the Revenue Allocation Formula for all tiers of government to be able to pay the minimum wage when passed into law.”
