2 Min Read

The chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), professor Mahmood Yakubu, has revealed that the commission has plans to investigate the micro- credit scheme, TraderMoni, which is being sponsored by the current administration.

Mahmood mentioned this when he was addressing the menace of vote-buying at a press conference in Abuja. He explained that INEC has received some information about the controversies surrounding the micro-credit scheme, hence they will check to confirm if Buhari’s administration has violated campaign finance laws under the guise of the scheme.

Unconfirmed reports state that different groups and civil societies have labeled the scheme as an indirect from of vote-buying.

Mahmood equally stated that INEC would understudy comments made by a member of the public during the investigation. He subsequently mentioned that there is a technique through which the commission monitors finance violations of politicians as well as their parties.

Before speaking with newsmen, the INEC boss had been in meeting with officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps. The meeting was scheduled in a bid to strategize on the success of the upcoming elections, and Mahmood identified 10 different ways in which FRSC can work hand-in-hand with INEC during that time.
