Non-ASUU lecturers start lectures and exams at Obafemi Awolowo University

2 Min Read

ASUU strike has not been called off yet but students of Obafemi Awolowo University have begun to write their second-semester exams for the 2017/2018 session.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities began a nationwide strike in November, last year with claims that tertiary institutions in the country are not properly funded as well as the fact that the government has not implemented its past agreement with the body.

The strike ultimately ended academic activities in many federal and state-owned universities in Nigeria. However, lecturers and exams are reported to have started in some departments in OAU.

Precisely, the lecturers who continued their normal academic coursework with students are those who claim they are not members of the body. Hence, there was no reason to suspend their duties.

English Language, Literary Studies, and a few others are among the departments that have been receiving lectures despite the strike action and their students allegedly sat for exams today.

Recently, while he was addressing the issue of the school’s calendar, OAU’s Public relations officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju insisted that the school does not have plans to extend its calendar, whether or not the strike further eats into it.

He said, “There’s nothing that suggests we are going to extend any calendar. Don’t let us be speculative, when we get to the bridge we will cross it.

The Senate of the university is in charge of the academic activities. If they find it find to extend, they will and if not, there’s nothing anybody can do about it.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed and don’t let us be speculative. Whether they are going to extend it or not has not stopped the students from reading, they should read.”

Meanwhile, students of the school have taken to social media to express their shock and opinions about the start of lectures and exams in the school. see the posts below.
