GoFundMe Organised to Pay for Trump’s Border Wall Takes on New Shape

2 Min Read

The American government is currently in its 23rd day of shutdown over an impasse between Donald Trump and the opposition party.

The sticking point so far has been the border wall which President Trump promised would be built to protect the United States from Mexico and other countries.

The President asked for about $5billion for this project, a number which has forced the Democrats to baulk.

Hence, the shutdown.

Some Americans had taken things into their own hands and a GoFundMe page was opened by Brian Kolfage which was established for the sole purpose of raising money to build the wall.

“We the People Will Fund the Wall” had raised over $20.3 million since the 17th of December,  but with fears that the money might not be accepted by the government soon, the project has taken a bit of a turn.

Kolfage has now elected to turn the project into a non-profit with the aim of building the wall without the help of the government.

“The federal government won’t be able to accept our donations anytime soon,” Kolfage posted on the donation site last week.

The new project, “We Build the Wall,” sets out to buy border parcels and “complete significant segments of the wall in less time, and for far less money, than the federal government.”

What then happens to the money of those who have already contributed? Well under normal circumstances, they can choose to leave their money in there to take on the new project, or they can get a refund.
