Villarreal has been struggling the Spanish league and is just three points away from the bottom three teams. With the continuous poor form, It was only a matter of time before someone took the heat. And as commonly seen in other teams, the manager, Calleja, was the first to be excused.
Almost immediately, the board replaced him with the equally experienced Plaza. The 46 years old sportsman once managed Villarreal’s B team between 2005- 2006. Since then, he has managed some other Spanish clubs at one period or the other. His contract will see him remain as Villarreal’s manager until the end of the season.
Unfortunately, in this current season, the club’s form has been worrisome. They have just won one La Liga game since September, while it’s not so certain they’ll progress to the knockout stages in Europe.
In their official press release, the club stated, “Villarreal has decided to rescind Javi Calleja’s contract as first team coach. The club would like to thank the coach for his work, dedication, and professionalism since taking over last season.”
