Delta Assembly wants police, other security agencies to fish out suspected killer herdsmen

3 Min Read

The Delta Assembly has passed a resolution, urging Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa to direct the Police Command in the state to fish out the suspected herdsmen who allegedly killed one Mr Anthony Edjebare.

The resolution followed a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ughelli North 1 Constituency in the house, Mr Samuel Mariere, during plenary on Tuesday in Asaba.

Mariere alleged that Edjebare who hailed from Ogor in Ughelli North Local Government Area, was killed by suspected herdsmen on Nov. 24, after attempting to rape his wife who was returning from farm.

He said that the deceased had gone to farm with his wife on that fateful day and after the day’s work, told his wife to go home while he would come afterwards.

He alleged that some suspected Fulani herdsmen accosted the woman and tried to molest her sexually and when the deceased heard his wife shouting he ran towards the direction.

According to the lawmaker, the man attempted to rescue his wife only to be shot four times by the suspects and he died on the spot.

Mariere He said: “late Edjebare who was 55 years old before his death had 11 children and the entire community has been thrown in fear and mourning.’’

He stressed the need to bring the culprit to book and expressed worries that a new farming season had just began and the people were scared of going to farm as a result.

The lawmaker said that the people of Ogor community were predominantly farmers.

Mariere said that Uvwheru community also in Ughelli North was under siege by herdsmen who could spread their hold to neighbouring communities.

Supporting the motion, Mr Anthony Elekeokwuri, representing Ika North East, said the state assembly was very worried that herdsmen had taken over many communities in the state resulting in loss of many lives.

According to him, security agencies have not taken commensurate action to arrest the situation.

Elekeokwuri also said that many communities in the state were under the siege by suspected herdsmen who carried out deadly attacks on the innocent farmers without any arrest being made.

He further noted that a monarch in the state was a victim of suspected herdsmen who kidnapped and killed him.

The lawmaker said some communities in Ethiope West and Ethiope East Local Government Areas had their own share of ugly experiences from the criminal activities of the suspected herdsmen.

The motion was unanimously adopted when the Speaker, Sheriff Oborevwori, put it to a voice vote
