Guardiola At Fault for German National Team’s Decline

2 Min Read

Former Bayern Munich and current Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola has been blamed for the downfall of the German national team.

Former Germany defender Hans-Peter Briegel made this claim stating that the Spaniard’s tactics have a hand in Germany’s poor form.

Germany was dumped out of the World cup in unceremonious fashion and even in the Nation’s League, the German team has struggled to get results

Briegel feels that Guardiola’s time at Bayern Munich changed the German mentality and made them believe that they needed a possession based game to win matches

“A very simple principle has escaped our mind: that in football the result is more important than the control of the game,” Briegel said

“Since Guardiola arrived at Bayern Munich, something has changed. We had the illusion that 75% of possession was needed to win. But having control of the ball is not enough to get a result, not always at least.

“Recent history, and also with the World champions France, has shown that you can also win by leaving the ball to the opponents and having less than 50% of possession.”

Germany suffered relegation from their Nations League group on Friday having failed to win any of the games played in the competition
