The West African Examination Council (WAEC) is in the news for presenting President Muhammadu Buhari with “attestation certificate and confirmation of school certificate result” on Friday.
The president’s WAEC certificate has become a controversial matter, as many opposition figures accused him of not having sat for the secondary school leaving examination.
However, the president had claimed on several occasions that his credentials were with the military.
But if the “attestation certificate” presented to Buhari was meant to quell the controversy surrounding his WAEC certificate, it certainly achieved the opposite as many Nigerians have accused WAEC of producing the strange “attestation” to please the president.
Checks have shown however that the “attestation of results” might not be as new as some Nigerians wish to believe.
Taking to its official Twitter handle, WAEC’s National Office for Nigeria in August 2015, barely three months after Buhari was sworn in, announced it had introduced the “attestation of results that can be obtained on request to serve as replacement for lost/missing certificates”.
