I Didn’t Say Fayose Will Die In EFCC Custody – Magu

EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has distanced himself from an audio recording presently circulating online that he said ex-Ekiti governor, Ayodele Fayose could die in EFCC custody without repercussion.

The anti-graft boss made this known in a statement circulated on commission’s official social media pages on Thursday titled “Fayose: Beware of Fake ‘Magu Tape’ in Circulation”.

Recall that Fayose turned himself in to the EFCC at the expiration of his tenure on Tuesday and the EFCC promptly detained him.

The governor is being investigated for alleged fraud totally N4.7 billion and the EFCC has reportedly told him to refund N1.3 billion supposedly taken from Ekiti State treasury.

But the anti-graft body said there is no plan to kill or incapacitate Fayose as is being claimed in many quarters.

This is just as the agency on Wednesday obtained a court order to detain Fayose for three weeks.

The statement read, “The EFCC alerts the public of an audio recording currently circulating in the social media in which Acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, purportedly made comments to effect that nothing will happen peradventure Ayo Fayose, ex-Ekiti governor dies in custody.

“Interestingly, the audio tape did not disclose the place where the conversation occurred and the person that Magu was supposedly talking to.

“Members of the public are advised to disregard this disingenuous creation an handiwork of mischief makers intent on distracting the EFCC from the serious work of wrapping up the investigation into the corruption allegations against Fayose.

The audio recording is fake as the comments did not emanate from the Chairman of the EFCC. Purveyors of this fake news especially a former spokesperson of a leading political party are warned to desist.”
