APC Senators Ignore Oshiomhole, Seek Reconciliation With Saraki

2 Min Read

Many observers that had expected senators on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to resume plenary on Tuesday gun blazing were left disappointed.

This is just as some APC senators that had been threatening to remove Senate President Bukola Saraki at the slightest opportunity, on orders from the party’s national leadership, upon resumption of plenary suddenly went silent.

Recall that the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had said, “Saraki will not be the first to be impeached and I doubt if he is going to be the last but definitely he will be impeached according to law and according to the democratic norms. The only way Senator Saraki can avoid impeachment is for him to do what is honourable by stepping down.”

After months of recess, the senate resumed plenary with a closed-door session during which the senate president was said to have sought to calm frayed nerves.

The APC senators, led by Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, were said to have resolved to give peace a chance in the upper chamber, in defiance of orders from the party.

TheCable quoted a legislative source as saying, “The senators have seen that the APC is not even fair to them… Frank discussions about the future of the eighth senate as it goes into its last stage held at the closed-door session.

“They agreed that nothing would distract them till the end of their tenure.”

Also, the APC senators were said to have extracted a promise from Saraki that he would allow national interest supercede in all his dealings as president of the senate.

“Following their closed-door meeting, the senators agreed not to allow external forces to cause disaffection or disturbance within the legislative arm of government,” another source told the online newspaper.
