Skye Bank: CBN Reassures Nigerians Over Money

2 Min Read

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reassured Nigerians who had funds in the now defunct Skye Bank that their money is still safe.

This comes following the revocation of the operating license of the bank over its inability to shore up the capital of the bank

Revoking the license of the bank, the governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele said: “By this decision, the licence of the defunct Skye Bank is hereby revoked,” he said, adding that “all customers of Skye Bank shall be automatic customers of the new bank and their accounts and records duly purchased by Polaris Bank.”

Many Nigerians were worried about what will happen to their money within the bank and anxious over the fate of their funds.

Reassuring them, Emefiele said that N786 billion has been injected into the bank which will now be known as Polaris bank and that banking operations will resume as usual on Monday the 24 of September.

“We wish to assure all depositors that under this arrangement, their deposits shall remain safe and that normal banking services shall continue in the new bank on Monday, 24th September 2018, to ensure customers to transact their businesses seamlessly.” the CBN said

Sola Salako Ajulo who describes herself on Twitter as a Consumer Rights Advocate, Social Analyst, Communications Consultant and Branding Professional said in a tweet that nothing would be changing beyond the name and that employees would still keep their jobs.

She said: “Dear Skye Bank Consumer, please don’t panic. CBN & AMCON has provided funds to honor your cheques. Your money is safe. No one is losing their job. Everything remains the same. Only the name will change to Polaris Bank.”
