4 men steal N11m worth of cashew nuts

Two men, Destiny Umoh, 36, and David Taiwo, 40, who allegedly stole a 40 feet container, containing cashew nuts valued at N11 million, were on Tuesday arraigned in an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Arraigned alongside Umoh and Taiwo, were Sani Mohammed,41, and Aliu Adisa, 41, who were charged with receiving the stolen items.

They all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Chinalu Uwadione, had told the court that the defendants committed the alleged offences on May 11, at about 10 a.m., at Ogijo village, Ikorodu, Lagos.

Mohammed and Adisa were alleged to have received the stolen items on May 12, at Ibadan toll gate.

Uwadione had told the court that the defendants and others who are still at large, conspired to steal the IVECO truck with registration number FST 737 XT, valued at N4 million, containing the cashew nuts.

The defendant stole the container loaded with 320 bags of cashew nuts valued at N11 million, belonging to Mr Christian Obidike, the prosecutor alleged.

The offences contravened Sections 287(5)(a)(b)(c), 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Adedayo admitted the first and second defendants to  bail in the sum of N3 million each.

The third and fourth defendants were also granted bail in the sum of N5 million each, with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned until Sept. 3 for mention. (NAN)
