PDP Raises Alarm over Fresh Plot to Arrest Saraki, Ekweremadu

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over a fresh plot by security operatives to arrest and detain the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, as well as his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

The fresh revelation was made public by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan, through a statement issued on Sunday.

The PDP further alleged that the arrest was planned to come ahead of the reconvening of the National Assembly and was intended to prevent the leadership of the Senate from attending the sitting so they could be impeached in their absence.

Excerpts from the statement reads,

The fresh plot to detain the two presiding officers is part of renewed design to keep them out of circulation, ahead of Senate resumption, so as to enable the APC senators, who are now in the minority, to throw up two of their members as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively on the excuse that Saraki and Ekweremadu failed to show up for proceedings in the Senate,”

Ologbodiyan also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of being behind the alleged forthcoming arrest and detention of the Senate President and his deputy.

The PDP said that part of the plot was to purportedly use security forces and several government agencies to also clamp down on the family members of the leadership of the Senate.

Mr. Ologbodiyan then called called on Nigerians and the international community at large to prevail on the APC leadership as well as the Federal Government to shelve such plan.

In all, the PDP cautions the APC and power mongers to know that Nigerians have seen through their intentions and will continue to firmly resist them by standing for democracy and the unity of our nation at all times,” he reiterated.

The fresh accusation by the Opposition PDP comes several days after the Senate President and his Deputy had accused the Federal Government of planning to implicate them in the failed siege of the National Assembly complex my masked operatives of the Department of State Security, DSS.

The Senate leaders had issued a statement on Friday through their media aides, Yusuph Olaniyonu and Uche Anichukwu, alleging that the APC led federal government was looking for every possible means to implicate PDP lawmakers in the failed siege.

The International community had condemned the show of shame where masked operatives of the DSS were seen blockading the National Assembly and preventing Lawmakers and staff alike from gaining access to the premises.

The siege had lasted for 7 hours after which Vice President Yemi Osinbajo sacked the DSS Director General, Lawal Daura and promised to bring all actors involved in the disgraceful attack on democracy to book.
