A former Nigerian player, Emmanuel Amuneke has been appointed as the new coach of the Tanzanian national team.

He was considered one of the finest Nigerian players of his time.

As a coach, the 47-year-old led Nigeria to win the 2015 Fifa World Cup in Chile and has come in in place of Salum Mayanga who was fired after a string of bad results.

His first job will be to get the Taifa Stars’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign back on track.

He was the manager of a Sudanese club called Watani where he left after being told to take a pay cut.

On his time there, he said; “Football in Sudan is great, the league this season was very very unbelievable,  divided into two groups each group had to produce four teams making eight for the playoff. So either you are in the playoff or you are playing for relegation. I was impressed,” he said.

He played  27 times for Nigeria and scored 9 goals but he was kept out of the 1998 World Cup due to a knee injury, the same injury kept him out of the Barcelona team whom he signed for in 1996
