Transfer: Wenger lands new job after leaving Arsenal

2 Min Read

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has joined the Japan national team in an advisory capacity, after Hajime Moriyasu was employed as the new head coach on Thursday

Wenger who is fluent in 6 different languages including Japanese, had spent 18 months in Japan as coach of Nagoya Grampus from 1995 to 1996, that was prior to spending the bulk of his life at Arsenal.

The 68 year-old Frenchman, who left Arsenal after 22 years in charge, was initially linked with the national team job. But the Japan Football Association (JFA) thought it better to appoint a more familiar domestic coach to replace Akira Nishino.

According to Sports Nippon newspaper, the JFA could still offer Wenger the post of technical director or even a more unofficial advisory role.

“I met Wenger during the World Cup in Russia,” JFA president Kozo Tashima was quoted as saying.

“He is taking a break from football but we talked about Japanese football.”

Wenger was previously linked with the Real Madrid job when Zidane stepped down, as well as the France national team job prior to the World Cup.
