A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday remanded in prison a 47-year-old unemployed man, Joseph Nwosu, after pleading guilty to theft of a power generator worth N60,000.

Magistrate Bola Folarin-Williams, who gave the ruling, said the accused should be kept in Ikoyi Prison pending sentence.

The accused is facing a charge of stealing.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, told the court that the accused had on July 15 at No. 10, Sari Iganmu-Orile, Lagos.

Okoliko said the accused stole the generator from the compound of the complainant, Mr Andrew Ibe.

“The accused was caught by a neighbour, alerted the complainant who handed him over to the police for further questioning.”

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides a three-year jail term for offenders.

The accused had urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying “ whenever my head is hot, I feel the urge to steal.”

The case was adjourned until July 17 for facts and sentence. (NAN)
