National Assembly Renews Call for State Police as Gunmen Kill 7 Policemen in Abuja

2 Min Read

The Senate and House of Representatives has declared the county’s security system as a “failed architecture” and renewed calls for the establishment of state police across the federation to contain the escalating violence that has consumed the country in recent times.

The decision to grant the request of state governors and Nigerians in general for state policing was carried in both chambers of the legislature and hinged on the inability of the existing security agencies to curb the incessant violence and bloodletting across many states in the country.

This comes on the heels of the fatal shooting of seven policemen by unknown gunmen in the federal capital territory- Abuja on Monday night.

In order to achieve this, both chambers of the legislature resolved to review the amendment of the 1999 constitution in order to decentralise the current system of federal policing- a process already begun.

Tuesday’s plenary led by the deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu mandated the committee on the review of the 1999 constitution to present an amendment bill to the house within two weeks.

Several Nigerians have reacted on social media

@ishak2isma  “the problem in Nigeria, we don’t take positive action until things have gone out of control”

@monsieur_jaydee  “the chicken is coming home to roost gradually”.
