Housewife demands divorce over lack of shelter

2 Min Read

A housewife, Maimuna Jaafar on Tuesday, dragged her 27 year-old husband, Abbas Kabiru to a Sharia Court at Magajin Gari, over alleged non provision of shelter for her and their four year old daughter.

The complainant, who was represented by her counsel, Kabiru Alhassan, said that she wanted to divorce her husband through khul’i.

Khul’i is a form of divorce permitted in Islam where a woman initiates divorce by returning the dowry she received from her husband.

“The complainant does not desire to continue with the marriage and fears she would not be a submissive wife, as such, she is willing to return the N50,000 dowry she received from the defendant.

“However, the complainant intends to substitute the money with six months feeding of their child, “the counsel said.

On his part, the defendant, said he did know the reason behind his wife’s decision of getting a divorce because he has been a responsible husband.

Abbas, who said he loves his wife, added that they had one problem which was that of accommodation as the wife had been living at her parents residence for more than a year .

“I have already gotten an apartment and informed my father-in-law on the development, but until now, there isn’t any response from them and I don’t want to separate from my wife and daughter, “he pleaded.

The Judge, Musa Saad, after listening to both parties said: “Since the complainant is not in court in person, you are given two weeks to try to meet to reconcile with your wife.”

He adjourned to June 18, for report on the reconciliation moves. (NAN)
