An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday admitted an unemployed man to N300,000 bail after being charged with possession of a gun.

The accused, Lasisi Olanrewaju, 38, resident of No. 35, Kayode St., Ebute Ipakodo in Ikorodu, near Lagos, is standing trial on a count charge of being in possession of a gun.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Aje-Afunwa, ruled that the accused must produce two sureties, who must show evidence of payment of three years tax to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until July 27.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwangwu, told court that the accused committed the offence on June 5 at 6.00 p.m. at Igbogbo in Ikorodu.

“The accused was apprehended by men of the Nigerian Police from Igbogbo Division during a search.

“He could not give a satisfactory explanation on the ownership of a locally cut to size gun in his possession.’’

The prosecutor said that the police had received an information that the accused was keeping guns in his house.

He said the police searched Olanrewaju’s house and found a gun.

Nwangwu said that the accused also conspired with others, still at large, to commit the offence.

He said that the offence contravened Sections 51 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 51 provides a two-year jail term for being in possession of a gun.

The accused, however, entered a not ‘guilty plea’ and his lawyer applied for bail on liberal terms. (NAN)
