Da Silva counsels young fashion designers to embrace technology

Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, founder, Eponymous Design Label, on Saturday urged young fashion designers to embrace technology, particularly the internet to make their designs more aesthetic to attract clients.

Ajayi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the internet and social media could be used to make designs more creative and stir up the interest of prospective clients.

“Fashion is fast adding to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the economy which makes it a worthwhile venture.

“There are even technological applications that have been created to improve the creativity in terms of aesthetics in the fashion industry.

“I, therefore, implore everyone interested in growing this industry to take advantage of technology to display their creative works to the outside community,” she said.

Ajayi advised young people who wanted to stand out in the fashion business to have an identifiable target audience in other to focus on their line of clothing.

“You need to be specific about the designs you want to venture into, be it men’s wear, women’s wear, children’s wear, accessories or shoes.

“This will help you focus on what you want to do and ease the process of achieving perfection in your profession,” the fashion crooner said.

She said young people should start by selling clothes that are not too expensive to attract prospective buyers and build their fan base.

Ajayi also advised up and coming designers to name brands using their personal names to identify such brands instead of nicknames.

She said this was a strategy towards preserving the integrity of brands.

“One important key to excelling and remaining relevant in the fashion industry is building a memorable logo using your name as the brand.

“Most young fashion designers who have started something small just give their outfit any name that comes to mind, especially nicknames,” she said.

She said most fashion designers abroad commanded respect because they branded their creative designs with their names such as Dolce and Gabbana, Victoria Beckham, Tommy Hilfiger, among others.

“You do not know where your talent will take you to in the future, therefore, building a memorable logo will help people identify more with you as a brand and as a person,” Ajayi said. (NAN)
