Stone-throwing protesters kill tourist

1 Min Read

Stone-throwing protesters killed a tourist in India’s insurgency-torn Jammu and Kashmir state, officials said on Tuesday.

Local police said the 22-year-old man from the southern metropolis of Chennai was travelling to the popular ski-resort of Gulmarg on Monday when his vehicle was attacked.

The police said a stone hit the tourist on the head.

He was taken to hospital but died late Monday night.

A 19-year-old local girl was also injured in the incident.

It was not clear what triggered the protest.

State chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who met the victim’s family told local media that the attack was “heart-breaking” and she was ashamed over the incident.

On May 2, a child was injured after protesters hurled stones at a school bus in Shopian.

In spite of frequent clashes with security forces, protesters in Kashmir usually do not target tourists.

The Muslim-majority state has seen a violent secessionist movement since the mid-1980s in which more than 44,500 people, rebels, security forces and civilians have died.

India blames Pakistan for nurturing militants who carry out strikes in Kashmir.

Islamabad denies the charge and calls them freedom fighters. (dpa/NAN)
