Nigerians React to Buhari’s Medical Trip

3 Min Read

The President, Muhammadu Buhari, announced through his official account that he would be travelling to England to conduct a medical check up.

In a short tweet, he said; I will be traveling to the United Kingdom tomorrow, to see my doctor, at his request. Will be away for four days; back in Abuja on Saturday, May 12.

The Presidency’s Twitter account then went into more detail with this tweet: Pres will tomorrow, Tuesday undertake a four-day trip to the United Kingdom, to see how doctor. He will return Sat, May 12th. On his return, the President’s 2-day State Visit to Jigawa, postponed because of the APC Ward Congresses, will now take place 14th & 15th May.

This was naturally met with a strong reaction from Nigerians many of who have been suspicious of the President’s health and opine that he is medically unfit to remain the number one citizen of the country.

Some of the reactions on Facebook were particularly frustrated as people commented on the President’s constant jet hopping.

Muhammed Sani, a Facebook user, said; This man, I never see anyone that traveled more than him. He can travel the whole world in a month.. what is wrong with the hospitals in Nigeria? Nawao.. No president has travel like this since in the history of this country but buhari case is different. May God help.. can’t wait for 2019 Sha..

Godfrey Odigie Igbinz added:  This is shameful, Nigeria 🇳🇬 doctors are on strike, Mr integrity, the incorruptible president, the president of the federal Republic of Nigeria 🇳🇬 is travelling to UK for medical check up. What kind of president are you?

Mahmud Abdulkadir reckoned that perhaps London should be turned to the capital of Nigeria since the President spent so much time there: They should turn London to the capital of Nigeria, it’s like that’s where governance is taking place now. Why are we Africans so hungry for power, u are not medically fit yet you want to run for second term.

Meanwhile, Atomrimam Fupsin, accused the President of medical tourism:  PMB is the number one medical tourist president we’ve ever had. He’s still going back on his word after saying that no elected officials will go for medical treatment abroad. Mr integrity indeed!

The reactions were not tied to Facebook alone as twitter users also had their say, though using the medium of humour. You can check out the reactions below.
