2 Min Read

Malam Bashir Yankuzu, Chief Imam of Federal University of Technology (FUT) Central Mosque, Minna, has lauded Federal Government’s ban on production and sale of Codeine in the country.

Yankuzu made the commendation in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Minna, describing it as the best thing that happened in recent times.

He, however, urged government to put in place stringent measures to ensure proper surveillance and total eradication of drug abuse in the society.

According to him, the menace of drug abuse poses serious threat to lives of young Nigerians.

He said “religious scholars must continue to preach and draw the attention of the society on
this danger.”

The cleric, who described as unfortunate the high rate of consumption of codeine among students, urged Federal Government to take drastic measures against those involved in selling drugs to safeguard the future of youths.

He added that “I strongly advocate the setting up of task force to deal decisively with any person or group of people found violating the government directives.

“What we now expect is for violators to be dealt with in accordance to the law.”

Federal Ministry of Health on May 2, 2018, directed National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban the production and sale of cough syrup containing codeine in the country.(NAN)
