Release: Leah Sharibu’s Father Begs Social Media Users

1 Min Read

Mr Nathan Sharibu, the father of Leah Sharibu, the only Dapchi girl still left in Boko Haram captivity, has begged social media users to stop creating confusion with fabricated news of her release.

Recall that Boko Haram had on February 19 attacked the Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, after which 110 girls were declared unaccounted for.

Surprisingly, the insurgents on March 21 returned all the girls, except for four who reportedly died and Leah Sharibu, who was not released for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.

But the social media space, purportedly relying on information from BBC Hausa Service, had on Saturday gone to town with news of her release and imminent reunion with her family.

Mr Sharibu has now described the claims as false, The Punch reported.

He was quoted as saying, “Leah is not back yet , but we are praying and hoping that God will grant her freedom someday.

“I want to appeal to social media handlers to stop confusing us with fake news about Leah’s release.

“I know the traffic they generate with headlines about Leah, but such headlines should be authentic and not mere rumour.”
