Bus driver, conductor docked for allegedly beating up policeman

For allegedly beating up a police officer, two men — Odunayo Awolere, 25, and Segun Abiodun, 31, were on Friday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Awolere, a driver and Abiodun, a conductor, both residents of Iyana-Logbo area of Ogun, are being tried for conspiracy and assault.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Dada Wasiu, said that the accused committed the offences on March 12, at Kola Bus-Stop, Alagbado, Lagos.

He said that the accused conspired to assault a police officer, Waheed Adebayo, attached to Alakuko Police Station.

“The accused beat up the complainant while he was performing his lawful duty,” he said.

Wasiu said that the complainant was beaten because he ordered the accused, who caused obstruction by parking their vehicle on the road, to move it away.

“The accused caused obstruction on the road, and the complainant, who was controlling traffic, asked them to move the vehicle away from the road for other road users.

“They refused and the complainant closed one of the doors of their vehicle.

“But to his greatest surprise, the accused jointly descended on him through beating.

“The accused left him to run away when they saw blood gushing out of his eyes.

“They were arrested and handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said.

The offences contravened Sections 174 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 174 prescribes three years jail term for serious assault.

The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and were granted bail, each in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs G.O Anifowoshe, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until March 29, for mention. (NAN)
