New Teachers Unqualified, Can’t Even Write Letter- El-Rufai

Kaduna state governor, El-Rufai

The Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai has lamented the lack of quality teachers saying that even the new ones being hired were deficient.

The governor, speaking at a roundtable discussion on governance, organised in Abuja yesterday, said that some of the new teachers couldn’t even write letters.

Recall that the Kaduna government in a massive cull, sacked about 21,780 teachers whom were said to be incompetent and a new test was organised to hire new teachers.

This move was heavily criticised at the time with many wondering what means of livelihood the sacked teachers were to turn to.

The state government after the test hired 25,000 teachers but it seemed that some of the teachers who got the appointment had done so under less than savory means.

El-Rufai said; “Even some of the new teachers we tried to recruit tried to game the system”, the governor said.

“We gave those that passed letters of appointments and a plain sheet of paper to write a simple letter of acceptance and some could not.

“It was clear they didn’t write the tests themselves.”

El-Rufai also talked up his plans to elevate the public education sector in the state, saying that the private schools should be worried as they would soon be rendered irrelevant.

“All their teachers have now left to join our government,” he said, adding: “We believe that in five years’ time, private education in Kaduna will be a luxury, rather than a necessity.”
