The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, has given the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration in Lagos a seven-day ultimatum to reverse the new hike in Land Use Charge in the state.
The ultimatum was issued in a Wednesday statement signed by its chairman, Adesina Ogunlana.
Ogunlana said in the statement that failure by the state government to reverse the hike would lead to a mass protest tagged “Hell Tax Must Go,” against the “Pharaoic tax regime.”
He added that the new hike if left unchallenged would succeed in turning Lagos into a “toxic environment and a living hell.”
Ogunlana said the association was strongly opposed to the hike which it called “excessive and arbitrary tax regime.”
He said that if Ambode had not rescinded the new hike by Monday, the association’s members would embark on the massive protest on Tuesday.
Land Use Charge is a consolidation of all property and land based rates and charges payable under Lands Rates, Neighborhood Improvement Charge and Tenement Rates Laws of Lagos State. The Land Use Charge derives its legitimacy from the Lagos State Land Use Charge Law 2018.
