I’m My Wife’s 5th Husband; I Want To Divorce Her – Man Tells Court

2 Min Read

A man, Rufus Otegbola, 47, has approached an Igando Customary Court to seek a divorce from his wife of 13 years, Funmilayo, saying she was a serial divorcee.

Otegbola told the court that his wife had previously been married four times before marrying him.

He asked the court to dissolve the union on account of alleged adultery on the part of his wife, saying he was no longer interested in her.

He said, “My wife is adulterous and a serial divorcee, she had married and divorced four husbands before I married her.

“Funmilayo is diabolical and fetish, she always comes home with charms and my fear is that she may kill me one day if I do not end the marriage.”

He equally said that his wife’s parents and siblings came to his house to pack her properties without his permission.

However, the wife in her response accused the husband of being a serial polygamist who already had three wives at home before tricking her into marriage by impregnating her.

She equally accused her husband of domestic violence, saying she was forced into premature labour because of severe beatings from him.

The respondent also said that she had no other choice than to pack to her parents’ home as she could no bear the beating.

“When he lost his job, I was the one feeding him with his wives and their children and I was also paying the school fees of our children and my step children,” she added, stressing that she was also tired of the union.

The court’s president, Mr Akin Akinniyi, in his judgment, noted that it was clear that both parties were no longer interested in the union and proceeded to grant the divorce.
