A Commander in the Boko Haram Sect, Umar who has been detained since 2014 was sentenced by the Federal High Court in Wawa Cantonment, Kainji, Niger State, on Tuesday to 60 years imprisonment for various acts of terrorism.
The 22-year-old, convict who showed no regret and kept a cold look during the trial stated if freed he would continue to commit acts of terror in Sambisa forest.
After a failed suicide mission on a school in Gombe State four years ago the 18-year-old convict was arrested by policemen.
He has been charged with five counts two of which incur a death penalty, however, the judge lessened the sentence due to the factor of the age of the convict and the fact that he was brainwashed to “excessive and consistent religious indoctrination and propaganda” probably making him malleable.
The judge added, “For count 3, I sentence him to 60 years imprisonment.
“I would have been more merciful but was rather dissuaded by the convict’s insistence that he would back the activities which constitute danger to the society and for which he was apprehended.”
The convict revealed that he had two wives in Sambisa Forest after joining the sect, and described himself as “an Islamic warrior, and a commander in the Islamic army”.
The convict spoke in Hausa saying he had over 100 lieutenants under him.
