PIC.6. PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI DECORATING THE CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF, MAJ.-GEN. TUKUR BURATAI WITH HIS NEW RANK CAP OF LT.-GEN, AT THE PRESIDENTIAL VILLA IN ABUJA ON THURSDAY (13/8/15). 5931/13/8/2015/ICE/CH/NAN

President Muhammad Buhari, in what could be called an about-face has said he is willing to review his appointments to reflect true Federal Character.

In a statement released by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, the Presidency said, “On the issue of Federal Character, the President declared that no ethnic group or political zone has been deliberately marginalized in the appointments made so far.

The President will take a second look at areas on which issues have been raised when a compendium of all government appointments is submitted to him.

President Buhari has been widely criticized for appointing Northern Muslims, especially from his region, the North West to sensitive positions especially in the oil & gas sectors of the economy and defence.

That said, if Buhari is asking for more time to pick his ministers, Nigerians should grant him that request. Why not? What do we even need the ministers for? To help Buhari run the government? A government that has already solved all of Nigeria’s problems?

Granted, Section 148(2) of the Constitution provides that the president shall hold regular meetings with the vice president and all the ministers of the government of the federation for the purposes of determining domestic and foreign policies of the government, to coordinate the activities of the president, vice president and ministers and lastly, to advise the president on policies and governmental affairs. But this president has proved that he alone can do this job.
