Chelsea gets boost as Torres returns to training

Chelsea have received a further boost in their pursuit of the Premier League title as Fernando Torres returns to training after a knee injury, according to the Mirror.

The Spaniard damaged the ligaments in his knee during the 3-1 win over Manchester United on January 19 and the original prognosis revealed the striker was expected to be out for three to four weeks.

Samuel Eto’o has been the preferred forward for Jose Mourinho in Torres’ absence, with Demba Ba as backup, but the early return of the 29-year-old will be very timely.

The Blues are currently on a 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions, which included an impressive 0-1 victory over title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Although Torres has once again failed to really find any goal-scoring form this term, the Spain international has been the best of the three options available to Mourinho up-front.

The 29-year-old has found the net eight times in 23 games in 2013/14, including the winner against City in the previous fixture at Stamford Bridge.

The victory over the Citzens has put the west Londoners firmly among the favourites to lift the title come the end of the season, with them currently being level on 53 points with Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Arsenal lead the pack with 55 points, but have arguably the hardest run-in of the three teams and it could well be Mourinho lifting the trophy for the third time in the 51-year-old’s career in May.
