Man Accidentally Blows Himself Up After ATM Theft Goes Wrong

A man has been admitted to the hospital in critical condition after attempting to rob an ATM machine and accidentally blowing himself up instead.

The explosion happened on Thursday night on the boulevard of a street called Glasgow Road in Clydebank.

A CCTV recorded the whole scene, the man could be seen getting blown backwards from the force of the explosion whilst trying to raid the ATM before collapsing to the ground. Another man was seen on the footage checking on the man before running away.

The 51-year-old suspect has been transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Police statement suggests they were attempting to steal the ATM.

Fiona Macarthur a detective inspector had this to say about the incident: “Inquiries are at a very early stage to establish the full circumstances and officers are currently examining CCTV as well as speaking to local businesses and residents.
One line of enquiry is that two men were attempting to steal the ATM and one of them has been injured in the process.
“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area late last night and saw or heard anything suspicious to please get in touch.”

Police report that a second 48-year-old suspect who has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
