Two drivers were on Wednesday brought before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for alleged reckless driving which caused the death of a bus conductor.

The accused, Monday Johnson (40) and Michael Teko (32), are facing a two-count charge of reckless driving and manslaughter.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the duo on Christmas Eve drove their vehicles recklessly on Apapa-Oshodi expressway, causing the death of Emeka Ogbu, a bus conductor.

“Johnson, the driver of a Volkswagen bus with registration number LSR 125 XD, had suddenly changed lanes to load passengers when Teko, the driver of Toyota Camry with registration number EPE 160 EV, on high speed, hit the bus from behind.

“Ogbu, the conductor, who was hanging on the bus had fallen down and sustained injuries to the head, but was later confirmed dead in the hospital,” he said.

The offences contravened Sections 19(1) and 20 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012.

The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs Bola-Williams, granted the duo N500,000 bail each with two responsible sureties in like sum, one of whom must be a blood relation.

She adjourned the case until Feb. 2 for mention, and ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the office of the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). (NAN)
