Former African and World Footballer of the Year Award winner, George Weah has been elected Liberia’s 25th President.

The 51-year-old politician was elected president of Africa’s oldest republic by winning in 12 out of the 15 counties in the presidential run-off election.

The run-off election was contested by the ruling Unity Party candidate and current Vice President, Joseph Boakai, and Weah, the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) candidate.

Weah was declared winner by National Electoral Commission Chairman, Jerome George Korkoya, after winning the election which held on Boxing Day.

Weah topped the first round of voting but did not secure the 50 percent needed to win outright in the election that held in October.

Before his election, the humanitarian was a Senator of Montserrado County.

He tweeted before his declaration as winner: I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends, and my loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season. We are on the verge of making history for our people. #Liberia #Liberia2017
