‘Unity List’ Divides PDP As Secondus Emerges Chairman

2 Min Read

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has won the party’s chairmanship race.

He won the race at Saturday’s National Convention of the party held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

Secondus, who enjoyed the backing of the party’s 11 governors especially Governors Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose, defeated Prof Tunde Adeniran, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and Prof Taoheed Adedoja to emerge chairman.

A breakdown of the result shows that Chief Raymond Dokpesi got 66 votes, Prof Tunde Adeniran got 230 votes and Prince Uche Secondus got 2,000 votes, while 55 votes were invalid.

However, Adeniran and Dokpesi had rejected the outcome of the election soon after voting ended but before results were counted.

The duo based their rejection of the result on the appearance of a “Unity” list with which Governors Wike and Fayose arm-twisted delegates to vote for Secondus.

Adeniran and Dokpesi brought this to the attention of the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Gabriel Suswan, who attested to having seen the list alongside some other delegates.

However, Suswam admitted to being overwhelmed.

To protest this, Adeniran staged a walkout of the venue with his supporters.

Speaking with the media, Secondus promised to work with all his fellow contestants to move the party forward.
