I am not sponsoring #EndSARS campaign – Dogara

2 Min Read

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara has denied links with the trending #EndSARS campaigners.

This is after Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood had accused a leading #EndSARS campaigner, Mr Segun Awosanya of being around politicians and then went ahead to publish a photo of Awosanya with the Speaker.

According to The Nation, Dogara described the FPRO’s actions as the height of blackmail against his person and office.

He equally assured that no amount of blackmail would make the House abandon its planned investigation into the various allegations of human rights abuse levelled against the men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) across the country.

Recall that earlier this week, social media especially Twitter had been agog with various accounts and heart-wrenching stories of harassment, intimidation and extra-judicial killings against the SARS officers.

Human rights watchdog, Amnesty International had in a September 2016 report revealed various acts of human rights abuses against SARS, a report which the police authorities dismissed with a wave of the hand.

While the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has released a statement ordering the reorganisation of SARS across the country in the aftermath of the #EndSARS campaign, keen observers have described the changes as cosmetic and incapable of addressing the rot in the squad.
