The Federal High Court sitting in Katsina, on Wednesday sentenced three men, Ibrahim Isyaku, 28, Haruna Shuaibu, 30 and Rabiu Jibril, 35 to various jail terms for possessing illicit drugs.

Isyaku bagged 15 months imprisonment for unlawful possession of cannabis sativa and psychotropic substances.

He was arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Jan. 17, on Katsina-Kaita road with 850 kilograms of Indian hemp and 221.8 grams of psychotropic substances.

Isyaku had pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency, claiming to be a first time offender.

Justice Babagana Ashigar in his judgment said that offence was punishable under Section 19 of the NDLEA Act.

He said that laboratory analysis had proved that the items were cannabis sativa and psychotropic substances, which were admitted and marked as exhibits before the court.

Ashigar, therefore, sentenced Isyaku to 15 months imprisonment without option of fine.

The court also sentenced Shuaibu to one year imprisonment for possessing 450 grams of tramodol in Katsina.

Shuaibu who pleaded guilty to the charge, urged the court leniency, saying he has a wife, an aged mother and six children.

He judge also sentenced him to one year imprisonment without option of fine.

Again, the court sentenced Jibril, to two years imprisonment for committing similar offence.

Jibril was arrested in Funtua on Oct. 7, with one kilogram of cannabis sativa and 15 grams of psychotropic substance.

After Jibril pleaded guilty to the charge, the judge sentenced him to two years imprisonment without option of fine.
