Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, have passed a bill prohibiting smoking in public places within the State.
The bill prohibits smoking in libraries, schools, museums, pubic toilets, restaurants, public transportation amongst other places.
Penalties for first time offenders include N10,000 fine or prison term of one to three months or both the fine and prison time.
Repeat offenders will pay fines up to N50,000 and/or risk imprisonment of up to six months.
Offenders who smoke in front of children are liable to pay N15,000 fine and serve a prison sentence of one month.
The bill has been sent to Governor Babatunde Fashola for assent.
