Three high-ranking former Turkish military officers have been handed life sentences for their role in a failed coup attempt in July 2016, a state media reported on Wednesday.

The three men, a brigadier-general, a lieutenant and a captain, had been expelled from the army following the attempted coup.

A court in the northern Turkish Bolu province found the defendants guilty of “violation of the constitution.”

The defendants were, however, acquitted on charges of membership of a terrorist organisation.

However, seven other military officers were cleared of all charges.

The Turkish government has accused the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, who lives in exile in the U.S., of orchestrating the failed coup.

According to the government, about 54,400 people are in prison as a result of the coup attempt, and almost 5,000 trials are under way.
